7/12/2023 0 Comments Domus de janas![]() The domus de Janas are the reproduction in reduced scale of the houses of the living and for this reason they are different from an architectural point of view: for example, some are hut-shaped round with a cone-shaped roof, others are rectangular with a sloping roof. Both for the accurate workmanship, especially at the architectural level with a typical conformation of T or cross, both for the rich interior decorations, the domus de Janas are unique as regards the cult of the dead of the ancient Mediterranean populations. Even in the case of the Mediterranean cave tombs, the dating is very broad, covering a period of time ranging from the Neolithic to the Bronze and Iron Ages. Usually inside these tombs were deposited the bodies of the same family clan or of the members of the same village. In this period Sardinia was inhabited by people very skilled in craftsmanship as evidenced by the construction of the domus de Janas: they were able to dig and shape trachyte rock or sandstone with a few tools to create underground tombs in which they buried their dead, thus returning them to the Mother Goddess, a deity dear to these people, as evidenced by the many votive statues found.
